GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Would you know what to do if you were the first person to drive up on a major rockslide?

It doesn't take a boulder the size of a moving van to get in your way, even a small rockslide, or mudslide, which is more common in these late winter months can be a dangerous situation.

Sgt. Jeff Lytle with the Colorado State Patrol says stay as far back as possible, because more rocks might still fall. "Protect yourself and get off the road as much as possible and if the opportunity is available, warn other traffic," says Lytle.

Once you're stuck behind a rockslide, patience is key. Don't turn around and try to drive the other way on the same side of the freeway. And be patient while emergency crews work to clear the scene or divert traffic.
