GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - We all know that prescription drugs, in the hands of small children, can be a devastating mistake - but did you know many common household remedies can also be extremely dangerous, even fatal?

Muscle rubs like Vicks VapoRub, Ben-Gay and Tiger Balm can cause seizures, delirium and coma.

Aspirin and Oil of Wintergreen, found in common products like Bayer and Ecotrin, can cause nausea, vomiting, seizures and coma.

Nasal sprays and eye drops, like Afrin and Clear Eyes, can cause lethargy, dangerously low blood pressure and coma.

Kristy Emerson with the Mesa County Health Department says parents need to safeguard their homes by thinking of dangers at the level and through the eyes of a child.

She says look around for things that are lower, or in their reach, and move them to higher, more secure locations.

If you ever suspect your child has ingested or become exposed to something dangerous, don't hesitate to call the Poison Control Hotline at (800) 222-1222, and if you can, have the product nearby so you can answer the operator's questions easily.
