The numbers are shocking. Suicide is all too frequent here in Mesa County. Experts say the states that have the highest amounts of suicide are in the Rocky Mountain region. Here in Mesa County we have double the national average. Experts say there are many reasons for this. One being that the area is rural and those who live here are typically very independent. They usually move away from there loved ones to come here.

Shelia Linwood, Suicide Prevention Foundation, say " It is really important that people get trained in how to detect depression or suicidal feelings. If we get more eyes and ears out there we will have less of a burden of suicide here in mesa County.'

For information on training or if you or someone who know needs help there are several programs here in Mesa County. You can call 1-800- suicide or visit Colorado West Mental Health at cwrmhc.org or www.suicidepreventionfoundation.org.
