Palisade looking at possibility of layoffs

PALISADE, Colo. (KKCO) - Palisade town leaders say layoffs for town employees are a very real possibility if their financial situation does not improve.

Town administrator Tim Sarmo tells 11 News January sales tax revenues were down 24 percent from where they were in 2009 and if that trend continues, Palisade could face a budget shortfall of $250,000 this year.

He says the town has already exhausted most of its cost-cutting options and would have little choice but to reduce the size of its staff.

The town does plan to continue moving forward with a number of capital projects this year. Sarmo says most of them are paid for with grant money or funds that were previously approved for use and could not be used to back-fill those projected losses.

Wow, talk about incompetence. Sarmo and the Trustees just bought 17k of street signs for vanity reasons while ingorning all the potholes in the streets they announce. Then just a few weeks ago they buy 125k of new land that was not even mentioned to the citizens until after it was a done deal. I guess they paid for the land with loyal citizens jobs! It seems all the rest of the world knows we are in a recession except our own Sarmo and Town government. Sarmo and the rest of the Trustees are still tuning thier fiddles as the Town burns down. This is the best example of poor government and financial mismanagement to come along in a long time. Yet again Palisade sets the (poor) standard. They should resign or be recalled. Thier incompetence has costs honest working people thier jobs.
