Investigators with the Grand Junction Police Department believe the driver of a semi truck that crashed into the 26 1/2 Road overpass fell asleep at the wheel.
Police say the man driving and the female passenger were ejected from the truck and their bodies were found in the wreckage. The truck was traveling from Denver to Grand Junction. The trucking company's name and the victims identities have not been released.
The Mesa County Coroner's Office says the two bodies were burned beyond recognition and dental records will have to be used to positively identify the victims. It could take up to two weeks to make a positive identification.
