Parasite Making Mesa County Residents Sick

Health officials are urging residents to protect themselves from mosquitoes while they enjoy this Labor Day weekend. They also want to warn of another infection on the rise.

So far this year there have been seven human cases of West Nile reported in Mesa County. But in addition to seeing more West Nile cases, officials are also seeing an increase in the number of cryptosporidium cases.

Cryptosporidiosis is an intestinal infection caused by a parasite and leads to diarrhea illness in humans. A total of nine cases have been confirmed in Mesa County for the months of July and August.

The parasite is commonly found in lake, stream and river water.
