The school board gave a very special award to several Mesa County school band programs Monday night.
Four county middle schools and one county high school received the Colorado Bandmasters Exemplary Award. Only ten schools across the state are honored with award each year.
To qualify for the award, bands have to get superior ratings from judges at different competitions and festivals throughout the year.
This year Grand Mesa Middle School, East Middle School, Redlands Middle School, Fruita Middle School, and Central High School were recognized.
School officials say these awards speak to how hard their students work and how dedicated the county's directors are.
"I can't speak highly enough of the directors we have hear," said Kathy Joseph, Music Coordinator for Mesa County Schools. "They're such quality. They could go somewhere else and make more money, but they don't. The dedication to the kids is just outstanding."
Joseph was also honored during the awards presentation. She was inducted into the Colorado State Band Association Hall of Fame.
