Low Radioactivity in Gas Wells near Rulison

A Federal Study says that if natural gas wells are drilled near an old underground nuclear blast site near Rulison, the risk of radioactivity being released is minimal.

That's according to a Department of Energy study released yesterday.
Energy companies are expressing interest in drilling near the old project Rulison site. Back in 1969 a nuclear bomb was exploded underground in an attempt to free up natural gas. It was part of a program trying to put nuclear devices to peaceful use, but none of the gas produced was sold because it was too radioactive.

The Energy Department and state regulators have imposed some restrictions on drilling in the area, but landowners don't think the restrictions are tough enough.
