Center For Independence Looking for Help to Change Lives

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Things like making decisions or getting around from place to place are everyday experiences most of us take for granted. But one local group is working hard to make sure they're experiences every person gets to enjoy -- and they're asking for your help to make that happen.

Like it's name implies, the Center for Independence is a local non-profit dedicated to helping people with all types of disabilities to live independently. Saturday, it's hosting what it's calling an important fundraiser to keep its unique programs running.

Chances are if you run into Bret Raff, he'll be eager to show you the many works of art he has created. He has down syndrome and has been taking part in the Center for Independence Recreation Program for about a year now.

"It's great," said Bret.

His father Jim agrees.

"It's been a good outlet for him to keep busy and interact with other people," said Jim Raff.

The program -- just one of eight the center offers -- focuses on letting participants experience physical recreation (basketball, bowling), social recreation (potlucks, game nights), and independent living skills -- all with as little supervision as possible.

"This is an opportunity for someone with a disability that has not had the chance to experience all the challenges or joys that we go through to have that opportunity," said Jane Newton, Director of the Center's Recreation Program.

Newton says when Bret first came to the center, he seemed reserved and his family was overprotective of him -- something that quickly changed.

"This gave them the opportunity to see that he could have a life," said Newton. "That he could have fun, and recreate, meet new friends, get out in the community."

Bret's family says they can't believe the changes they've seen in him as a direct result of the center.

"Vocabulary, conversation wise, yes, he's opened up quite a bit," said Raff.

If you'd like to help Bret and others like him, then be sure to show up to the center's Summer "Fun"-raiser Saturday July 31 at Grande River Vineyard in Palisade.

Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased at the Center for Independence, located at 740 Gunnison Avenue. The price jumps up to $20 at the door. The event kicks off at 6:30pm and will feature local band "Flat Top Reed," food, and a silent auction with more than 75 great prizes to win.
