RIDGWAY, Colo. (KKCO) -- Tragedy hits the small town of Ridgway.
A family is mourning the loss of their two-year-old son who died last week while the family was traveling in Mexico.
The boy's babysitter and her ex-boyfriend are facing murder charges in the case.
Now the Ridgway community is opening its arms to the Charette family, hoping to help ease the pain.
Manager of Willow Creek Floral Laurie Steward said she can't imagine what parents Randy and Jen Charette must be going through.
"People have called and come in today, just saying how are they doing? What can we do?" said Steward. " We even had a call from Telluride that didn't even know the family but wanted to make sure that they had flowers."
Mexican authorities said, while under the care of the Mexican babysitter, her ex-boyfriend entered the family's home and attacked two-year-old Axel, throwing him into the pool and leaving him to drown.
The ex-boyfriend was arrested for both murder and rape. The babysitter is charged with homicide for failing to stop the attack and for lying about it to medical personnel.
A memorial fund has been set up in Axel Charrette's name at Alpine Bank in Ridgway.
The funeral service for Axel will be held Friday at Crippen Funeral home in Montrose. A memorial service will also be held at Sherbino Theater in Ridgway next Tuesday.
"When you have a catastrophe that happens like this it's just so hard to comprehend, and when your heart breaks your heart breaks for everybody, and we just, our thoughts go out to the family," said owner of Willow Creek Floral Judi Folga.
