Airport plans for intense winter snow

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Grand Junction Airport staff had to jump into motion to clear the runways. Some crews were up at 5 :00 AM to make sure flights booked this morning could take off safely.

Removal operations were in high gear all day and they'll go on until late tonight.

"We have staff that's out here until midnight and then 24 hours if needed," Amy Jordan, GJT.

Three types of heavy machinery are in charge of keeping the area clear for airplanes. Snow plows, brooms and blowers start at the runway, which is the most important part, then clear the connector between the runway and the taxi way. This job takes a lot of man power and hours to complete.

"The number of people we have to have a minimum of at least five or six people to do runways taxi ways and ramps at any given time," Ted Balbier, Airport Operations.

Those crews will continue to work hard this week as the forecast reports highs for Thursday at 31 degrees and Friday at 33 degrees with a major chance of snow overnight..

Airport staff works closely with the National Weather Service to get ready for any kind of severe weather headed our way.

For nervous travelers, officials said safety is always the number one priority.

"Don't worry about the weather conditions because pilots and the airlines are professionals and they will not operate if it's unsafe," Jordan.

Officials said they haven't had to cancel or delay any flights this winter because of bad weather. Two planes however were diverted to the airport on Tuesday because their final destinations weren't prepared for them to land.
