Today marked the ninth annual Alex Bennett Memorial Tournament. An event than Alex's family started almost a decade ago in an effort to preserve his memory and help other young athletes in our area.

"It really touches my heart and it is so special to have this positive event," said Alex's sister Charlotte Bennett.

The event drew 50 teams and 150 players to the Saunders Field House at Colorado Mesa University. Community members and family friends have gathered each year to help keep Alex's memory alive.

"He would be embarrassed to have this big a fuss made over him," said Alex's father Bruce Bennett.

Bruce said Alex was a low key kind of guy, an excellent student and an avid basketball player.

Money raised at the tournament is put toward three scholarships. One scholarship is given to a male basketball player at CMU and the two other scholarships are awarded to District 51 high school athletes.

"Its awesome to see all the kids come and play, you know Alex just really loved basketball," said Charlotte.

"This tournament keeps his memory alive and its a testament to him," said Bruce.

Charlotte says next year marking the tenth year, may be the last for the tournament.
