Amending the Colorado Constitution

MESA COUNTY, Colo. A resolution passed by the Mesa County commissioners this week supports a movement that - if passed - will totally restructure representation in the Colorado government.

Colorado Counties Incorporated (CCI) is pushing to change the system of representation in either the house or senate from one based on population to a county-based system, a way of countering what the commissioners call 'years of urban dominance'.

"That front range strip is dominating all state policy making and were a huge state," says Commissioner Steve Aquafresca. "We have many communities, both Eastern Colorado and Western Colorado that have very different needs."

Commissioners say if the legislation passes, it should serve to even out that imbalance.

The board voted unanimously to support the decision.

If it passes through the Colorado General Assembly, the measure will require voter approval.
