GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Just as writers or craftsmen might come together in a guild to share their talents, the women behind the Art Jewelers Guild do the same. They're a group of local artists who go beyond simply stringing beads and tying knots. They spend countless hours weaving, beading, and most importantly working together, to create what they call wearable art.
“We do have this group of women that has vast experience all across the board, they have their own styles, and Candi with the lamp work and Virginia with the bead weaving,” says Jennifer Goodwin, member of the Art Jewelers Guild and owner of “Effects Jewelry.”
They're a growing group of 20 or so women who come together once a month to mentor beginners, teach classes on specific techniques, and sell their original pieces at shows.
"That's the most fun thing, I think is, to actually have someone make and wear your jewelry. It's a very personal thing,” says Virginia Jensen, facilitator of the guild.
Jensen says the personal touch she gives her jewelry makes it that much more fulfilling to see someone purchase and love a piece.
"Sometimes I’ll do a show and people will come back wearing the jewelry they bought the last show and showing it to me,” she says.
Plus, buying directly from the artist allows for less expensive prices than you'd find in a jewelry store or gallery.
"You know you get right to know the maker of the jewelry and it's a real personal experience. And you know that person and you can go back to them again,” says Jensen.
The ladies are thrilled to host their first downtown show this weekend and next. It comes just in time to purchase a Valentines Day gift for that special someone, or to spoil yourself a bit so you can add some extra sparkle to your Valentines Day date ensemble.
The Art Jewelers Guild will host their Valentines Day show at Varied Treasures, a new antique shop. The ladies of the guild will be there Friday, Feb. 3 from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, and Saturday, Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Varied Treasures is located at 309 Main Street.
