Authorities: Survivalist shot at helicopter

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Authorities say an elusive survivalist fired shots at officers in a helicopter before surrendering in the central Utah mountains.

The Emery County Sheriff's Office says 45-year-old Troy James Knapp was arrested Tuesday morning near Ferron Reservoir in central Utah. Authorities did not say if the aircraft was struck.

Knapp is suspected of burglarizing dozens of Utah cabins. He eluded capture for nearly six years.

Authorities began closing in on Knapp last weekend after a pair of hunters encountered him on Friday. He identified himself as the "Mountain Man," a nickname he got from cabin owners.

Detectives investigated two cabin burglaries in the area in the following days that matched the method used in other break-ins.
