NEAR DELTA, CO (KKCO)_Sixth graders from Montrose, Delta and Olathe ditched the classrooms today and spent the day learning in the great outdoors.

The BLM along with other agencies hosted the students for their third Public Lands Investigations.

Over 650 students made the trek to the Gunnison River to learn more about the great outdoors. They learned about fly tying, macro-invertebrate collection, identification and analysis, and officials say being outside is a great way to learn.

Around 150 students attended each day. The program is designed to enhance the kids scientific thinking and to learn to explore their natural resources throughout the area.
