Paige Birgfeld's Remains found off Hwy 50

MESA COUNTY, COLO (KKCO) --- June 28, 2007 was the last time Paige Birgfeld was seen. Since that time, her car was found burned, her Dad said not enough was being done to find her, and countless hours were spent looking for the missing mother of three.

On March 6, 2012 investigators got a break in the case. The Delta County Sheriff’s office, just south of Mesa County where Birgfeld was last seen, called Mesa County after receiving a report of human remains found. Hikers had stumbled upon the skeletal remains just off Highway 50 in the Wells Gulch area. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Delta County Coroner’s Office, Mesa County Coroner’s Office, and Mesa County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene.

Forensic odontology has been used to tentatively identify the remains as belonging to Paige Birgfeld of Grand Junction. KKCO 11 News learned dental records identified the woman, but a DNA test is still pending.

KKCO 11 News asked the Delta County Sheriff, Fred McKee about the condition of the remains. He described them to us as bones, not decaying remains but would not elaborate on the type of bones or how many. It’s also still not known if there was any visible trauma to the body.

The next step is a DNA comparison from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. That will confirm the results of the initial identifying information. Then the remains may be forwarded to a forensic anthropologist in an attempt to identify any evidence of trauma.

In addition to the bones, other personal items were found along with the remains. Authorities won’t elaborate on what those personal items were.

Investigators are continuing to search the Wells Gulch area for any clues that would show how the body arrived in the area or any clues as to how Paige Birgfeld died.

Paige Birgfeld was reported missing in a 2007 Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Investigation that has since been classified as a homicide.

I was watching the replay of Paiges 48 Hours Mystery episode this evening and decided to check the internet to see if anything was new on the case. I am happy she was found. Perhaps they will discover enough additional evidence to go after the person responsible,

Will someone please put a lid on Paige's loud mouthed, pompous old man? We all know how horribly important HE is because he has money and he is from Denver. His bashing of our local law enforcement is getting old. He needs reminded that HIS searchers turned up nothing too....

How dare you, A man lost his child, he has every right to vocalize his opinion on how her situation was handled, Sounds to me like you are just jealous that he has more money than you...well too bad. Grow up and have a little sympathy for the man who has just had the small bit of hope that he would see his daughter again crushed. Every parent of a missing child has a sliver of that hope left until it is ripped away from them, no matter how much you know in your head they are gone you still hope, his hope was ripped away and insensitive jerks like you bashing him when she was just found is disgusting. I only hope you never have to feel the pain he is feeling, even if it would teach you how to treat others.

Ok.. to those of you who keep stating the problems with the search and the obvious corruption as to why she wasn't recovered in 2007. Has it left your minds where we live, the climate, the weather? Its middle school geography and science where we all should have learned about errosion and how snow melt, wind, rain, etc removes dirt, yada yada yada.... honestly folks, I am sure if she were literally laying by the rocks, they would have found her then. Lay off the blame on the search and rescue and emergency responders here.... needles in haystacks are not easy to find.

Your middle school education didn't teach you how to spell erosion correctly, did it? I believe they found the skeleton partially buried and in a protected spot out of the main flowline. Before I'm accused of being Lester, another news channel specifically showed us in video where her remains were found. She may have been moved. But the mystery to me is that why were all her belongings strewn all over hwy 50 back in 2007, as a distraction maybe, as a "catch me if you can" ploy?

You sound like an idiot dude. Learn how to use proper grammar and spell correctly, or no one will take you seriously.

Very strange the veiled threats, cries of cop hater and screams of 'conspiracy theory' that have arisen when people just want some answers to the many unresolved questions. It's as if someone knows there is more to come out and they are loading the forthcoming discussion with doubts....

Mr. Blagg perferred to utilize the landfill. I don't believe he separated the bodies. He didn't care enough too. Abby is at the landfill somewhere.

I agree that she's at the landfill, but I know they tried hard to find her.

Some of you people are unbelievable. A beautiful young woman has been found dead and all you can think to do is, once again, criticize Channel 11 for reporting the news. This is not about going to your competitions website and bashing them, it's about finding the killer and bringing justice to Paige and her family.

I don't know anything about the others saying the media hung out at the (alleged) killer's house, but if they did, that was way out of line and whoever made that decision should be fired. You can't call that "reporting the news".

And just so you know..I'm not condoning the guy and his actions if they are true. And I hope whomever did this does get what they deserve. But that was not the way to go about it KKCO..
