GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – Bike safety is a big concern right now as temperatures heat up and more people hit the trails.
Just last week a biker was seriously injured after being struck by a car in Denver.
Local bike experts say the main safety precaution, of course, is wearing a helmet.
Also, bikers should always look ahead at least 10 feet to avoid any objects or curbs; and know what's behind you.
Another important factor to remember while biking is to take your time.
"If I have to, I jump up on a curb or I stop, or I shut the whole thing down. There's no reason to lose a life for 10 seconds of speed," said Chris Brown, owner of Brown Cycles Bike Shop.
Experts also recommend riders wear bright, obvious colors, putting mirrors on your handle bars to see what's behind you and make sure you have your mandatory lights and reflectors.
The city of Grand Junction requires all bikes to have a light on the front that shines 500 feet and a reflector on the back of your bike.
