Boy Scouts compete in annual Pine Wood Derby

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - You can certainly bet there are a number of tired boy scouts in Grand Junction this evening after a day of racing.

Dozens of boy scouts gathered this afternoon at Moose Lodge for their annual Pine Wood Derby.

Each boy scout built his own car and then today, they all put them to the test.

There were 33 entries, all with custom built racing cars.

"They get to build their own car from scratch and then they get to do whatever designs they want and put any kinds of things they want onto it for their idea of how things can go faster. And then they get to come out and execute it and see if their ideas did well,” said Derek Conlon, the Pine Wood Derby coordinator.

The winners of today's race will go on to the district meet in two weeks.

There, they'll race against other teams in Grand Junction.

If all goes well, and they do well, they could even go all the way to the national championship.
