GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- As part of Counseling Awareness Month, local counselors are hoping to change some of the stigmas surrounding seeking counseling.
Nearly 20 percent of Americans are diagnosed with a mental illness every year, but less than half of them seek professional treatment, according to the American Counseling Association.
“There’s such a stigma attached to counseling, there’s a shame in people’s minds of having to seek professional help,” said Shelley Millsap, licensed professional counselor with Behavioral Health and Wellness.
Millsap described counseling as a therapeutic relationship between two people with a goal to help one of the persons.
Millsap will be holding a free childhood depression screening clinic Saturday, April 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Western Colorado Pediatric Associates, 3150 N. 12th. St. The clinic is open for kids ages 10-18.
