MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) -- Two New York brothers are arrested near Mack for possessing eight pounds of marijuana.
Thursday morning at 2:38, a drug task force officer pulled over a black Cadillac on I-70 near mile marker 6 for following an SUV too closely, according to a Mesa County Sheriff's arrest affidavit.
Inside the car, the officer found Jesse Smith, 31, and Schuyler Smith, 26, both from Dryden, New York. When he walked up to the window, the officer says he smelled a strong odor of marijuana and could see evidence of it on the center console and floor.
Jesse, the driver, admitted to smoking marijuana about two hours prior to the stop, the affidavit says. He submitted to a voluntary roadside sobriety test, and the officer noticed Jesse staggering and leaning on the vehicle when he got out.
Jesse failed the test, so he was taken to the Mesa County Jail by another deputy. The remaining officer then searched the vehicle, where he says he found about 8 pounds of marijuana inside a duffel bag in the trunk. That amount has a street value of $20,000. There was also about $6,000 in cash and a paper that outlined various amounts and prices, which the investigator says were consistent with prices for marijuana.
At that point, Schuyler was arrested and taken to jail.
Both men are being held without bond for possessing more than 8 ounces of marijuana and for dispensing/selling marijuana. Jesse is also accused of driving under the influence of drugs and following too closely.
Jesse and Schuyler will have their first court appearance Friday at 1:30 p.m.
In Colorado, it is illegal to possess more than one ounce of marijuana for recreational use.
