GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. State traffic safety leaders are saying thanks to law enforcement for saving lives.

The Colorado Department of Transportation presented traffic safety champion awards to nine officers and five departments from around the Western Slope at an awards ceremony Wednesday.

"We want to say thank you to these officers who are out there working hard," said Captain Paul Matzke, of Colorado State Patrol. "Like the DUI officers. Their enforcement is done late at night and long shifts for them."

The awards recognize strong ticket and arrest numbers from statewide campaigns like The Heat is On and Click It or Ticket.

Front Range departments will be recognized at an award ceremony in Denver on May 23.
