CMU student-run restaurant and pub opens near campus

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) The Colorado Mesa University student run restaurant held it's grand opening on Monday night. "The Point" is located directly across from CMU's Moss Performing Arts Center.

CMU's Associated Student Government and Entrepreneurship Club helped conceive and open the establishment. Around 30 students will be working in the restaurant.

Johnny Nitti, an entrepreneurship major at the university, is managing "The Point" and says it's a hand on learning experience preparing him for life after college.

"We have all learned things that there is no way to really learn doing the stuff in class," said Nitti.

Georgann Jouflas serves as the faculty adviser for 'The Point' and played a large part in moving the restaurant from dream to reality. She feels out-of-the-classroom education is also a resume builder.

"Employers really want people who have some experience. The education is great, but they want some experience," said Jouflas.

For those concerned about alcohol being served so closely to campus, Nitti says campus police will be working closely with the restaurant staff to make sure student patrons stay safe.

"The liquor enforcement, they've actually been great to us, they've actually said they would be around us our first couple weeks of opening and make sure we are doing everything by the book...mostly so they can help us," said Nitti.

And for CMU students like Ashley Sullivan, precaution is a good thing when it comes to alcohol being served so close to campus.

"That it doesn't get a negative stigma from the community, I think that's the biggest thing," said Sullivan.

'The Point' is located at 1230 N 12th Street. It will be open Tuesday October 22nd. Hours will be from 11:00 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
