Mesa County, Colo. -- An 18-year-old female is dead after an early Saturday morning crash in the North Fruita Desert. The suspected driver was arrested and booked into the Mesa County Jail.
Just after midnight, a 2004 Grand Jeep Cherokee was traveling southbound on 18 6/10 Road. The vehicle then lost control after a curve and overturned 1 ½ times. The female passenger, 18-year-old Lydia Perez, was ejected and pronounced dead on scene. It appears as though she wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
Officers say 20-year-old Alexis Perez, who is Lydia’s cousin, was uninjured. Alexis was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and faces felony vehicular homicide, among other charges.
Another female passenger in the vehicle suffered minor injuries in the crash.
The Colorado State Patrol is requesting anyone with information pertaining to the crash to please call 920-945-6198. They also would like to remind drivers to always designate a sober driver and to always wear your safety belt.
