CU-Boulder edges closer to campus smoking ban

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) -- The University of Colorado at Boulder is edging closer to a ban on smoking anywhere on campus after the university's student government offered its initial support of the proposal.

The Daily Camera reports student leaders backed the plan Thursday, and top university officials are expected to ask the chancellor next week to create a task force to move the campus toward being smoke-free.

Deb Coffin, vice chancellor for student affairs, says the proposal calls for a "soft transition" over a two- to three-year period. She says the university might allow designated smoking areas for a semester or a year as part of that transition.

The $48,000 cost of the program would be partly covered by a grant from Boulder County Public Health.
