CU conservative scholar defends statements

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) -- The University of Colorado's visiting conservative scholar is defending comments he made about student gender.

Steven Hayward said in an interview with Colorado Public Radio that he is confused by all of the new classifications for student gender on official documents.

The Boulder Daily Camera reports some student leaders are upset with the comments and are calling Hayward a bigot.

Hayward says he does not believe any of his students felt uncomfortable or unsafe.

The university's official non-discrimination policy states that the campus will not tolerate discrimination or harassment based upon protected classes, which include race, color, national origin, sex, pregnancy, age, disability, creed, religion or sexual orientation. The classifications also include gender identity, gender expression or veteran status.
