GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Candidates for Mesa County Sheriff are convincing voters why they should check off the box next to their names as the primary election inches closer.

John Pennington and Steve King are running for the open sheriff position as Republican candidates.

Colorado State Senator Steve King said he is qualified for the position after more than 30 years in law enforcement in the Grand Valley.

"Spent years, eight years at the legislature, but law enforcement has always been my passion," King said.

John Pennington said his diverse training as a marine and social work investigator would be a source of knowledge for a sheriff.

"I've seen and done quite a lot with regard to the court systems and enforcement and children and investigations," Pennington said.

Ballots are being mailed out to registered voters.

They can be dropped off in ballot boxes 24 hours a day, seven days a week until election day, June 24th at 7 p.m.
