UPDATE: Victim in fatal crash identified

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The Mesa County Coroner's Office has identified the Whitewater woman killed in a fatal crash on Highway 50 Friday morning.

The Coroner says the woman is 23-year-old Amanda Lynn Chavez. The Corner says the cause of her death was multiple blunt force injuries. Her death has been ruled an accident.

Colorado State Patrol says the accident was likely caused by drugs and excessive speed.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - A 23-year-old Whitewater woman is dead after an early morning accident.

Colorado State Patrol says the driver of the Lexus as headed eastbound near mile marker 40 on Highway 50 around 7:30 a.m. when she went off the road, over-corrected and spun across the median into oncoming traffic, hitting a Subaru driven by a 45-year-old Montrose woman.

The driver of the Lexus, who was not wearing her seatbelt, died at the scene and had to be extricated from the car.

The driver of the Subaru suffered serious-- but non-life-threatening-- injuries and has been taken to the hospital.

State Patrol says drug use and excessive speed are contributing factors in the crash. The identities of the drivers have not yet been released pending notification of family.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – A Whitewater woman has died in a car crash near Whitewater, according to Colorado State Patrol.

The accident happened on Highway 50 at mile marker 40 around 7:30 this morning.

According to a KKCO 11 News crew on the scene, a woman driving a black Lexus was heading eastbound on Highway 50 when she lost control of her car. The Lexus slid sideways and was t-boned on the driver's side by a Subaru.

The woman in the Lexus died on scene. Emergency crews are trying to get her body out of the vehicle now.

Conditions on the road were wet and slippery.

CSP says the westbound lanes of the highway have been closed, but traffic is slowly moving through the area. Troopers advise that you avoid that area on your morning commute.

There is no word on other injuries or the cause.
