Changes to come for the Mesa County Fairgrounds

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Mesa County Commissioners approved the master plan for the Mesa County Fair Grounds at the public hearing on Monday.

Many from the community showed their support for the potential improvements.

"I am thrilled this is going to impact us for generations. It's an amazing thing," said Mesa County 4H member Hope Phalzgraff.

Approving the master plan simply means that further planning can continue. Fairgrounds manager JoCarol Haxel said today's approval has been 30 years in the making.

"But we are not done by any means. We've got the planning piece approved in the master plan but now the real work begins," said Haxel.

The improved fairgrounds could mean 215 permanent jobs for Mesa County once the project is completed.

County officials project the Mesa County Fairgrounds could bring an additional $9 million in annual revenue if the project is completed as planned.

The plan proposes major changes to the Equestrian Center and the park area, as well as the addition of an indoor Civic Center.
Haxel says laying out a budget for the project is the next step.
