FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO) - Fruita officials have announced the fireworks display planned for the 4th of July celebration has been canceled.

Citing the extreme fire danger in Mesa County, officials decided it was in the public's best interest to cancel the show. Vegetation around the launch site are dry and should a fire start, officials fear it would spread to nearby subdivisions.

Officials say the required safety precautions associated with their large-scale show couldn't be met under this year's dangerous fire conditions.

Instead of the show, the City is offering a free BBQ and concert on the 4th of July at 6:30 p.m. It will be held at the Civic Center Pavilion Stage and include a performance by the Centennial Band as well as a BBQ of hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, ice cream and root beer.

Officials say it's a good idea to bring your own beverages as well as a chair or blanket. And pets must stay at home.
