GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Local governments are putting a hold on marijuana business licenses until Colorado legislators formulate a plan for the regulation of the now-legal drug.
On Monday, the Grand Junction City Council members discussed a draft resolution regarding Amendment 64 at a readiness session, but many said it's going to be months before the state lays out guidelines regarding the sale of marijuana.
City council member Tom Kenyon thinks it's in the best interest of the city to wait for those decisions to be made at the state level.
"We don't know locally what the rules and regulations are going to be regarding Amendment 64, so we do not want to start or encourage businesses at this point in time,-- whether it's clubs or whatever-- until we know what the rules and regulations are going to be," said Kenyon.
This means the city manager will not accept applications for commercial marijuana businesses at this point.
Kenyon says he expects some regulations to come out at the end of this year's state legislative session, and at that point, the council will have an idea of how to react locally.
