GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Businesses in Clifton could be considering upping their sales tax, to improve the surrounding area. It's called a Public Improvement District, but the business owners would have to decide to petition for it. Right now, tax dollars from all residents of Mesa County fund public construction in Clifton, like sidewalks or street lights. The added sales tax of up to one percent, would pay for the renovations specifically in that district. In recent months, county officials have helped businesses in the area understand how a public improvement district would work.

"There was certainly some interest in the concept from some of the business owners. Of course, they're all individuals, and so they have differing opinions," says Jessica Peterson, spokesperson for Mesa County.

Some businesses voiced opposition to any tax increase for their customers. Other owners thought the improvements may benefit store traffic in the long run. Ultimately, the outlined district area would have vote on whether to pass it. Currently, Grand Junction customers pay state, county and city sales taxes, upwards of eight percent total.
Clifton shoppers pay only county and state taxes. The added one percent would still be less, than if Clifton was considered an official city.
