LAKEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -- Police in the Denver suburb of Lakewood say an officer killed while investigating reports of gunfire may have been shot by another officer.

Lakewood police spokesman Steve Davis says the officer was killed when police responded to a report early Friday of shots being fired in a residential area. Police located a home where the shots were believed to have been fired and arrested three people.

Davis says the officer was shot after the trio had already been taken into custody. He says it's not clear who shot the policeman and investigators are looking at other possibilities.

Davis says there was a lot of confusion when officers responded to the home that's near the border with the town of Edgewater.
