Colorado Springs teen will light U.S. Capitol Christmas tree

Seventeen year old Ryan Shuster was chosen out of more than 1,300 entries. Ryan will be traveling to Washington, D.C. with his parents in early December for the event. On October 19, Santa and Mrs. Claus visited the Blanco Ranger District Office of the White River National Forest where they randomly drew Ryan’s entry.

Ryan is a senior at Discovery Canyon Campus in Colorado Springs. He loves the outdoors and was a finalist in the El Paso County science fair in 2006 and has earned a number of awards in piano and music theory starting in 2007. His interests include music, theater and nature which are likely to be included in his field of study for college.

The Christmas tree was cut down from the White River National Forest in Meeker, Colo. on Friday. The spruce is 73 feet tall and will travel more than 3,000 miles before getting to its final destination.

It will pass through Grand Junction this Wednesday at Cabela's.
