GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)_More families have been able to afford treatment for autism since Colorado insurance companies were required to cover therapy last summer.

However, autism advocates say the battle for therapy is still ongoing.

There continues to be a lack of therapists in the state since there wasn't a way for specialists to be paid until the 'health insurance mandated autism treatment' law went through.

Since the bill was passed experts are hoping more therapists will practice in Colorado.

"That will take some time before significant numbers of providers practice here. it was the himat law that's going to drive that change," says Betty Lehman with the Autism Society of Colorado.

Advocates say there's also confusion over what types of therapy are covered with alternative methods not receiving payment from insurance companies.

Experts say families often turn to the State Division of Insurance to mediate differences with their insurer.
