DURANGO, COLO. (AP) -- State regulators have granted a permit to allow cleanup work at a controversial gold mine in southwestern Colorado.

The permit issued Wednesday doesn't allow Wildcat Mining to do any mining or milling until it cleans up its historic mines near Hesperus.

The Durango Herald reported that members of the Mined Land Reclamation Board unanimously approved the permit with a long list of conditions. They stressed that the permit initially would only allow water sampling and other surveys.

Since 2006, Wildcat Mining has done work at the mines without a permit, including blasting two mine portals.

One critic, Scott Collignon, questioned the wisdom of giving such an unusual permit to the company.

Wildcat Mining said the permit is a step forward.
