GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Mesa County commissioners are supporting the oil and gas industry by urging the Bureau of Land Management to renew leases up for review.

In a five page letter to the BLM Colorado River Valley office, the commissioners asked the BLM to reaffirm the 65 oil and gas leases up for review rather than modify or cancel them.

With more than half of the leases up for consideration being in Mesa County, commissioners worry for the local economy if those job resources are shut down.

"The energy industry is really a critical industry for West Central Colorado," Mesa County Commissioner Steve Acquafresca said. "It has been for decades and it will continue to be in the future."

The commissioners haven't received a response from the BLM yet about the letter.

The BLM has held multiple scoping meetings on the issue including one in De Beque three weeks ago.
