Community members take part in Breastfeeding week

GRAND JUNCTION,Colo. This week is world breastfeeding week and throughout the world more than a 176 countries will come together to support moms that breastfeed their children.

Experts say that breastfeeding has numerous benefits for babies including helping babies develop their jaws muscles better than babies who are just bottle fed, and it also helps keep them from developing allergies or diseases like diabetes.

Karla Klemm from the Mesa County Health Department and the Breastfeeding Task Force says there are also several surprising benefits for moms who choose to breastfeed.

"It helps their uterus to shrink back down after having their baby and they tend to go back to their pre-pregnancy weight faster and it really reduces breast and ovarian cancer."

On Thursday night the support for moms will continue at the Grand Junction farmer's market, where moms can learn about the different resources available to them and their babies.

They will also be hosting a movie night on august 27th to help educate any mom thinking about breastfeeding.
