Cool weather helps fight Fern Lake Fire

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colo. (AP) -- Cooler weather and a 2-inch layer of snow have helped crews gain the upper hand on a 3,500-acre fire burning in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Fire officials say the Fern Lake Fire, which is 45 percent contained, will continue to smolder in heavy fuels but the precipitation will prevent any further spread. Another 4 to 8 inches of snow is expected to fall in the area Saturday and Sunday.

The fire, which remains under investigation, has been burning since Oct. 9 and has destroyed one cabin. All evacuation orders have been lifted.
