GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Zohydro is a hydrocodone based extended release drug. The dose of this pill is higher than Vicodin as patients only have to take it once a day.

Unlike other pain relievers, Zohydro does not have a tamper-resistant mechanism and officials say it's much easier for patient to abuse it.

"What are they doing to prevent abuse on it and at this point they're doing nothing on this and so it's kind of crazy if you think about it did we learn nothing from OxyContins," Deputy Chad Williams.

The makers of Zohydro have plans to create tamper resistant pills in a couple of years but releasing it without that safeguard is a scary thought for some experts.

The CDC reports prescription drug related deaths have more than quadrupled over the last decade.
