DENVER (AP) -- A powerful snowstorm is expected to blanket the Denver area and northeastern Colorado with as much as a foot of snow.

National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Kalina tells The Denver Post (http://bit.ly/15cRsHK) the storm had already dumped 5 inches of snow in some places by late Sunday morning and is expected to add another 5 inches through Sunday night.

Ann Williams with Denver's Department of Public Works says the city has deployed 70 plows to deal with snow that "is coming down fairly fast and fairly heavy." The storm has caused numerous accidents on Interstate 25.

Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration reports flight delays of up to two hours at Denver International Airport.

DIA spokeswoman Laura Coale says airlines have reported the cancellation of about 200 departures and arrivals.
