DENVER (AP) -- The Denver Zoo served more than 2 million people in 2012, the most in its 117-year history.

The Denver Post reports (http://bit.ly/10s6wm0) the zoo served 2,065,410 people. That figure includes 1,988,593 visitors and 76,817 people who participated in the zoo's outreach education programs, which serve schools, libraries and community centers in Colorado and Wyoming.

The zoo also set a record for household membership at 68,450.

The previous high in the number of visitors was set in 1995, with 1,958,842. Many of those visitors came to say goodbye to the famous Klondike and Snow polar bears just before the animals were moved to Florida.

Zoo president Craig Piper says the opening of a new elephant exhibit played a large role in last year's success.
