DENVER (AP) -- A Denver sheriff's deputy charged with helping a felon escape the downtown jail has resigned.

The Denver Post reports 36-year-old Matthew Andrews resigned effective May 23.

Investigators say inmate Felix Trujillo walked out of the jail in a sheriff's deputy's baseball cap and jacket in April. An arrest affidavit says surveillance video showed Andrews and Trujillo walking away from the jail together. At the time, Trujillo was awaiting sentencing for his role in a robbery.

Investigators allege Andrews told co-workers he helped Trujillo because he'd been threatened and had been told there was a contract out on him and his family.

Trujillo later surrendered.
