GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) "The Reformers" breaks down the business and corporate motives behind privatizing schools system across America.
The documentary focuses on the changes made in Douglas County in 2011, but Jeff Leany, with the District 51 school board, said this is something that he would like to see in schools here.
Officials there are paying teachers for their performance and letting go those who are not performing. The statistics show that since the reform, some test scores have consistently gone up, which Leany said is an incentive to change things locally.
However, there are two sides to each story.
Filmmaker Brian Malone says with this new system teacher-student relationships suffer. The kids become a number and not a name as teachers simply tell them how to do well on tests and do not encourage them to become well-rounded and creative.
The film was shown Monday night at the Mesa Theater.
