MONTROSE, Colo. (AP) -- The Montrose County sheriff is looking for whoever shot a dog in the head and left her in a canal.

Sheriff Rick Dunlap said Wednesday that a woman found the yellow Labrador retriever crawling out of the canal on Tuesday.

The Montrose Daily Press reported that the dog, now named Blanche, was shot with a small caliber weapon in the top of her head. The bullet apparently exited through her jaw bone, passing cleanly through.

She has been placed in foster care while she recovers. Dunlap said he wants to find her a permanent home when she heals.
