Eating to boost your immune system

Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) - As the flu season continues, those who haven't caught it are trying out new solutions to boost their immunity.

There are some simple things you can do to stay healthy besides exercise. Certain foods can help keep you from getting sick.

Health experts at Healing Horizons say that at least 60 percent of their client-base is sick. Diet often comes up as one way to avoid the flu.

"There are herbs like garlic that are really helpful that we can use in cooking that have antibacterial type properties to help boost the immune system. That's a really common one. Also apple cider vinegar seems to work magic for people, too. And we want to get the unfiltered apple cider, too, and take a couple tablespoons several times a day to ward off cold and flu," says Dr. April Schulte, clinic director for Healing Horizons.

The experts also say to drink green tea during the flu season and to avoid cold foods such as raw fish and dairy as they can form phlegm.

You should also add berries, fruits, vegetables, and any food with vitamins A and C to your diet.
