GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) --- Five-year-old Elijah Wallace, who family members say was nearly beaten to death in January, has been transported to Children's Hospital in Denver to continue his care in hopes his condition will improve.

Elijah was moved on Tuesday, his fifth birthday. His dad told KKCO 11 News that Elijah is in stable condition, but his brain swelling is worsening. He's started to show movement in his left arm and right eye. Aaron said doctors aren't sure how long he will have to be at Children's Hospital.

Meanwhile, the man facing felony child abuse charges relating to Elijah's injuries appeared briefly in court this morning for a review hearing. Thirty-year-old Jessie Martinez is facing two counts of felony child abuse, a class three felony; and one count of child abuse, a class two misdemeanor.

Martinez is the boyfriend of Elijah's mother, Ashleigh Wallace, who is also facing one count of felony child abuse and false reporting to authorities, a class three misdemeanor.

According to an arrest affidavit, Wallace took Elijah to the emergency room on Jan. 13, two days after he sustained injuries. Doctors diagnosed Elijah with a broken right arm and severe head trauma, which doctors said would've been a "significantly salvageable situation" had Elijah been treated right away.

An online fund, "Hope for Elijah Wallace," has been set up to help Elijah's father pay for medical and travel expenses. You can find the fund by clicking the link below.
