Encana wants to drill outside Battlement Mesa

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - The Encana gas drilling company has applied for state permits to put a new well pad just outside the Battlement Mesa community in Garfield County.

The Post Independent reports that if granted, the permit would allow for the drilling of nine gas wells in the area. Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission Director Dave Neslin says commission staffers are reviewing the permit application.

Another natural gas company, Antero Resources, has plans for up to 200 wells within Battlement Mesa's boundaries. Several residents oppose drilling in the Western Colorado community.

A 20-day period for the public to comment on Encana's application ends Feb. 10.
