GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- A former Grand Junction police officer and firefighter took the stand in his own defense Wednesday in the sexual assault trial against him.

Eric Janusz appeared calm as he answered questions about the summer of 2000. The victim --whose name will not be released-- says he had sex with her that year when she was just 16.

She claims they were together number of times, including in the Mesa State College gym and in his police vehicle while he was working as an officer at the college substation

He denied the accusations completely.

Janusz said he wasn't assigned to that area until September 2000 and told the courtroom that Mesa hired its own security in the summer at that time and the substation wasn't even open.

During his testimony, Janusz did admit to having sex with the woman in 2004 when she was about 21, but says the relationship lasted less than a month that time. He says they started another relationship in April 2011, until he started dating the woman who would later become his wife.

During cross examination, the prosecutor pointed out inaccuracies in Janusz' statements. The attorney showed that Janusz actually started at the college in mid-August, 2000. That is closer to the time the victim claims she had sex with Janusz.

Debate also ensued about which gym the woman referred to in text and Facebook messages obtained by investigators.

Janusz says she was referring to Gold's Gym, where they both had memberships and where they had sex once. The prosecutor inferred that the woman meant the gym at Mesa State College, referring to their alleged sexual relations there.

The trial resumes Thursday.
