DENVER (AP) -- Law enforcement agencies across Colorado are stepping up efforts to catch drunk drivers over the St. Patrick's Day weekend.

Colorado State Patrol Chief Scott Hernandez says there were 424 arrests and four fatalities statewide during last year's ramped up DUI enforcement. This year's enforcement period started Friday and will continue through Monday.

Darrell Lingk with the Colorado Department of Transportation says the average RTD bus or light rail ticket costs $3.75 and a typical cab fare within the Denver metro area is about $22.25. He compared that to the average cost of a DUI, which he says is more than $10,000.
